Functional Neurosurgery
The Functional Neurosurgery and Experimental Neurology Group consists of over twenty engineers, modellers, neurologists, neurosurgeons, physiologists and PhD students, and works towards an improved understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of chronic neurogenic pain and Parkinson’s disease. The group has pioneered new surgical targets for these conditions, whilst establishing the nature of core circuit dysfunctions. Future goals are to develop predictive models of systems dysfunction and brain therapies, controlled through intelligent brain-computer interfaces that deliver targeted stimulation only when necessary. In parallel we will explore how functional neurosurgery may help control autonomic disorders such as hypertension and asthma.
