Neuromuscular
Clinical Neurology in Oxford has a strong legacy in neuromuscular disease with a strong translational component. The pioneering work of John Newsom-Davis on autoimmune disorders of neuromuscular transmission has continued, and in addition we undertake molecular genetic, cellular, and electrophysiological studies of the inherited myasthenic syndromes at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine. Their laboratories are underpinned through national specialist clinics and the clinical research is based in the West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital. At the level of the motor neuron we have established the Oxford Study of Biomarkers in Motor Neuron disease. This is a cohort of MND patients undergoing serial advanced MRI with cerebrospinal fluid and serum extraction, in an effort to develop much-needed biomarkers to aid diagnosis, prognostication and therapeutic trial monitoring. We also undertake genetic, biochemical and cellular studies to understand the basis of the neuronal degeneration that occurs in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
